Lunch at Sundowners, Key Largo

Our British club gathered with the local Alfa Romeo club early Saturday morning for a group drive to Key Largo and lunch at Sundowners sea-side restaurant. We were pleased to also be joined by a group of classic BMW’s.

Our route followed scenic Old Cutler Road to the turn-off for Black Point Marina, and then through the agricultural back roads skirting Homestead Air Reserve Base and Homestead-Miami Speedway to the parking area of Florida City’s Last Chance Bar & Package Store. There we picked up the remainder of our group and headed south on US1’s 18 Mile Stretch, then over the Jewfish Creek Bridge and onto the Overseas Highway at the top of Key Largo. Our destination restaurant was just a bit farther down the road.

The Sundowners staff had reserved a special shaded area for us with an extra long table, but upon our arrival it was apparent  that a second long table would be needed for an unexpected overflow. No problem; They quickly made it happen. It understandably took a long time to take orders and prepare food for such a large group but they were up to the task giving us great service.

After a great meal, we left in smaller groups for the return trip. Route options included US1 and Card Sound Road to Florida City, followed by the Turnpike, Krome Avenue, South Dixie Highway or back the way we came.
